Farkle Attachment Improvement Farkle

Is this redundant?
One of my frequent complaints about attaching various devices to my ST1100 is the dilemna of removable versus non-removable. For the non-, this is straightforward: screw it or rivet it to the bike in some fashion. The removable option has been to use the 3M heavy-duty hook-and-loop pads available at Radio Shack. The problem that I have with this is that the longevity of the adhesive in the hot sun is poor, and it's very easy to remove the piece stuck to the dash when it's hot. I was at a trade show recently, and the Velcro guys had a booth, so I stopped to chat about esoterica such as peel, shear, and tensile ratings of the material. The sales guy gave me a sample kit to play with, and lo and behold, there was an item in there that got me to thinking. It's called a Velstud, and it has a particularly aggressive double-sided hook. When mated with any loop , it has the strongest grip I've seen. But the cleverest thing about this is the base. It has a bayonet stud on the back for a 1/4" hole. Drill the hole in the dash or tupperware, snap it in, and voila! When the device isn't mounted, the stud won't degrade in the sunlight and heat. It has a little less than 1" square area, so four at the corners would hold a Street Pilot, two for a radar detector, etc. As with the Well-nuts that Ray Stevens acquired, these are sold in bulk, 500 to a box. If there's enough interest, I would be willing to parcel out small quantities for cost + postage. Obviously, my needs are small as well, and I wouldn't want to be stuck with 490 Velstuds that I couldn't use... :-)

Well, here's a feeble attempt to show y'all what a Velstud looks like:

The square part is about .962" square, about .280" from the top hook surface to the underside of the round flange. The overall height is .700", so it protrudes about .420" beyond the mounting surface face. The max thickness of the panel without "modification" appears to be <.062", and it would be removable if you can get to the back side to squeeze the ears together. Order Form
